When someone on the red carpet is truly just feeling herself, we all know. Ban the bleached teeth and assholes of the Illuminati give me a middle-aged Australian anarchist who looks like she bought her outfit at Christopher & Banks.

Black jacket bedazzled with a roller derby patch that looks like it came from JoAnn Fabrics? Check. No wonder we all found Mad Max: Fury Road costume designer Jenny Beavan’s outfit to be the most remarkable of the evening. Who are these unremarkable people with individual incomes to rival those of small countries? Why do they look so goofy in such expensive, tame clothing? Fashion is full of miracles, so where were the swan dresses? (Possible answer: staying home in protest.) Ill-fitting strapless nightmares abounded (the best comment of the night went to my boyfriend, who asked why Sarah Silverman looked like she was being squeezed out of a tube). The world’s elite came together for one night and it was as awkward as a high school prom. The red carpet was a veritable Ringling Brothers parade of brightly colored, twenty-thousand-dollar gowns on colorless bodies with interchangeable heads. However, during travels across the Wasteland, she will encounter her eventual boss at the beginning of Fury Road, Immortan Joe, leading to a situation in which "the two Tyrants war for dominance.Last weekend’s #OscarsSoWhite served as yet another powerful reminder that, in general, the United States Entertainment Industrial Complex is suffering from a sort of ecological disaster in which a parasitic species (fine-boned, unhappy-looking white entertainers) has dramatically outnumbered other members of its genus (glamorous, powerful black entertainers). Indeed, the film's synopsis says that Furiosa will be "snatched from the Green Place," falling into the involuntary servitude of the warlord Dementus. Tellingly, some set photos of the star reveal that the character will not immediately be recognizable from her Fury Road form, shown sporting long brown hair, albeit wearing a green glove on her left hand for post-production CGI replacement with an indicative prosthetic.

While that film became a widely beloved hit that even cracked the mainstream awards season with six Academy Award wins for production categories, the seemingly inevitable next step of a direct sequel never quite manifested.Įventually, Miller opted to go the prequel route by focusing on an origin tale for Furiosa, casting a young headliner with a lot of momentum in Taylor-Joy for the title role.

Despite its frequently evoked designation as a prequel to that franchise - which is still best known from Miller's 1979-1985 trilogy of films starring Mel Gibson - the movie is, in actuality, a prequel to the hit 2015 reboot Mad Max: Fury Road, which saw Tom Hardy as the eponymous post-apocalyptic wanderer, joined by a breakout character in the head-shaved, prosthetic-arm-wearing Furiosa, as played by Charlize Theron. Furiosa went into production back in June under the auspices of longtime visionary Mad Max director George Miller.
